Cartier watches have been around since the mid-1800s. Since there have been so many unique watches made over such a long period of time, it is tough to find a complete catalog of all the watches that Cartier has ever made. Certainly there is no one resources (that we have found) that lists all Cartier watches online. But, all is not lost. There are a handful of books that look at Cartier watches specifically as well as Cartier among its peer brands. Furthermore, auctioneers like eBay and Sotheby’s have catalogs available online that will give a good overview of some of the Cartier watches available.
Other market leaders included Cartier , which developed the Santos in 1904 for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont—he wanted a watch he could wear on his wrist while flying. The Cartier Tank was developed around World War I. These were the market leaders. Cartier was actually pretty important in the development of the wristwatch. Tiffany was a large retailer but was much less important as an innovator. Cartier is unique in many ways. It is for instance one of the very few brands that has a very rich collection of models in the twenties that are still in their current line up.
One reason the IWJG (International Watch & Jewelry Guild) just deals mainly in new watches is because they don’t have maintenance and repair problems. They’re under warranty or parts are available. Patek Philippe just stopped supplying parts for their older calibres a couple of years ago. So now you’ve got to repair or make a new part or find an old part that’s been lying around in somebody’s drawer unused. Collectors, at least the ones I know, quite often stick to one brand and get really deep in its history, but that doesn’t necessarily need to be the brand they wear in daily life.
Countless variations of the Tank appeared (in the Chinoise, horizontal bars at the top and bottom of the dial rest on the Tank’s vertical “treads”), and in 1965 there was even a watch whose body was shaped like a parallelogram. But it was not until the Must de Cartier in 1976 and the reissue of the Santos in 1978 that the firm was able to reestablish itself as a player on the wristwatch scene. In the 1980’s the Cartier ‘Panthere’ was the watch to wear. The common theme has always been that Cartier is geared more for the women’s market. One model that has done extremely well for Cartier men is the ‘Roadster’ and ‘Roadster Chronograph’. Just recently, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the ‘Santos’, Cartier unveiled the ‘Santos 100’. The ‘Santos 100’ and the ‘Santos 100 XXL’ continue in popularity. Newly released ‘Ballon Bleu de Cartier’ and ‘La Dona de Cartier’ are already favorites of watch aficionados. In 1874, his son Alfred Cartier took over the administration of the company, but it was Alfred’s sons louis, Piere and Jacques
